Evening racing will shortly be over which will mean things get slightly quieter as everyone has been pretty flat out recently.
That said, there are still the all-weather evening meetings and, as a jockey, the more possibilities of rides – and therefore winners – the better as far as I am concerned.
There is always talk of burn-out with jockeys during the summer months, and as a result, we are not permitted to ride at more than nine meetings a week – a rule which was introduced about four years ago. [...]
What a week! I managed to hit 50 winners yesterday for the turf season and today I’ve hit 80 for the calendar year. Lovely Jubbly.
I’m going to enjoy my luck and make the most of it, life as a jockey has many ups but also many downs, I think part of begin a good jockey is riding the waves with little fuss.
Myself and Cathy are both wanting to be leading lady rider on the turf, it pretty close between us, I’m enjoying the banter with her she’s very amusing. I left the racing post alone for 5 minuets and look what happened…..
I still haven’t come off cloud nine from Dream Ahead’s win, so god knows how long it will take me to get back down to earth after Margot Did’s win in the Nunthorpe on Friday. To be honest, I thought a Group 1 might be asking too much from her, but she had been trained for the race and was absolutely buzzing before at home. It’s amazing how these things work out. I rode her to win a Listed race in Ayr instead of notching my first Royal Ascot winner Deacon Blues, who I was originally going to ride in the Wokingham. It was a sacrifice but I thought she might take me places, and she’s certainly done that now! I must also thank the owners, who have put me up for all of her 13 runs. Things didn’t always go right for her last season but I don’t think I could be blamed for any of her defeats. That said we’ve only recently figured out how to get the best of her! She needs plenty of daylight and only has one gear so you have to save it for as long as you can. It was all very straightforward and she was always travelling the best and did it pretty comfortably in the end. [...]
