This time last year I posted a real landmark win for me thanks to Boom And Bust’s win in the Betfred Mile. It was my first at Glorious Goodwood and one of the biggest handicaps of the year, so I’ve naturally got very fond memories of the day.

Ihad a 100 per cent record on him last year, winning three from three, and he’s only had one run since, when he ran okay in the Royal Hunt Cup. That run will have tuned him up nicely for this, and the ground should hopefully be fast enough for him.

Marcus Tregoning’s three runners at Goodwood have all run well this week, and Boom And Bust really stood out when I saw him recently at Marcus’s. We were all pretty hopeful of another great run, but the draw (22) isn’t ideal.

That’s my only ride at Goodwood on Friday, but I have three mounts at Newmarket in the evening, including another horse who I’ve had some success on for Marcus. I won twice on Konstantin last year, but he has been hit by the handicapper and hasn’t quite recovered that form this season. He looks a good price to finish in the frame though.

I’ve got four rides at Goodwood on Saturday, including in the feature race, the Blue Square Bet Stewards’ Cup. I ride one of the outsiders, Esprit De Midas, for Dean Ivory. He’s a horse who I’ve never sat on before but he has seven wins to his name and has run well in big fields before.

This shorter six furlongs looks like it might be in his favour, as does any cut in the ground. He’s a long shot, but Dean is an expert at training these types so hopefully he can give me a good run in one of the highlights of the year.

I’m back on one of my old favourites, The Betchworth Kid, on whom I won a Listed race at Nottingham last year, and he also gave me a good run in that season’s Ascot Gold Cup.

He’s a horse who takes some knowing and I like to think I have a good relationship with him – I finished third back on him at York in June – and hopefully we can make the frame at nice odds in the one mile and three-quarters handicap.

I ride Fair Value, who I haven’t sat on before, in the opening Stewards’ Sprint for Simon Dow. She won very nicely at Epsom last time. She looks like she appreciates downhill tracks so Goodwood should really suit, and she’s another filly who could run well at a nice price.

I should also mention Set To Music who runs in the Listed race at Newbury on Sunday. She ran very well to come third in the Lancashire Oaks – a Group 2 race – so she should find this easier and it looks a winnable race.
